University of Prince Edward Island
At the University of Prince Edward Island, Department of Chemistry, we are committed to developing green chemistry initiatives including:
1) Introducing concepts of Green Chemistry into undergraduate chemistry courses: including but not limited to the 12 green chemistry principles or discipline specific examples and considerations in the development of green chemistry alternatives.
2) Developing sustainable laboratories: we are focused on redeveloping our organic and inorganic undergraduate chemistry laboratories to utilize greener solvents and safer reagents.
3) Green chemistry research: research groups within the department are working to develop green catalyst (Clapson Group) as well as introducing more sustainable practices into current research projects.
4) Green chemistry outreach: The Chemistry Department at UPEI is hosting the 2025 Atlantic ChemCon conference with a theme of “sustainable and green chemistry”.

Short Term Goals:
– revamp organic and inorganic undergraduate labs to remove or reduce dichloromethane usage.
– create course specific green chemistry content and introductory slide
– host the Atlantic ChemCon conference with a theme of sustainable chemistry
– continue green chemistry research in the area of catalysis.
