The University of San Francisco

The University of San Francisco is a vibrant and diverse university located in the heart of San Francisco. As a Jesuit University, USF is committed to educating the hearts and minds of our students, caring for the planet, and working for justice in our communities. Incorporating green chemistry, sustainability, and environmental justice into our chemistry classes furthers this mission and prepares our students, who graduate with B.S. or M.S. degrees, for roles in industry, academia, and government.

We plan to continue to:
• improve our lab safety training, extending ideas of risk assessment to general chemistry
• replace hazardous solvents and reagents in our teaching and research labs
• integrate ideas of green chemistry, sustainability, and environmental justice across the chemistry curriculum
• collaborate with colleagues in related departments (engineering, environmental science, biology, etc) to share pedagogy and ideas to further our common educational goals
We cobble together course materials from a variety of places: course textbooks, GCTLC, ACS-GCI modules, Beyond Benign, J. Chem. Ed., Org. Proc. Res. Dev., and self-developed materials.
