Northern Arizona University

At Northern Arizona University, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry blends academic excellence with a bold commitment to sustainability. Housed within the College of the Environment, Forestry, and Natural Sciences (CEFNS), the department offers dynamic undergraduate and graduate (MS) programs—including two ACS-certified degrees—designed to prepare the next generation of scientists and innovators. Renowned for delivering one of the strongest undergraduate chemistry educations in the U.S. Southwest, the department leads by example in integrating green chemistry and sustainability into every level of learning. From reimagined lab experiences to cutting-edge research and newly developed courses, students are immersed in a forward-thinking environment where scientific discovery and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.

In the short term, we aim to strengthen our existing course on green chemistry and renewables while re-envisioning our analytical chemistry and instrumental analysis courses through a sustainability-focused lens. These efforts will align pedagogical practices with the principles of green chemistry, providing students with a more environmentally conscious scientific foundation. Looking ahead, our long-term vision includes the development of a formal emphasis or certificate program in green chemistry and renewables, positioning our department as a leader in sustainable chemical education.
