Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology

Mohawk College’s School of Engineering Technology is excited to announce that the Department of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology (CEB) has recently signed Beyond Benign’s Green Chemistry Commitment. Beyond Benign offers education, support and resources for all levels of academia interested in moving towards Sustainable or “Green Chemistry” lab practices and learning. By signing, faculty and staff within the CEB portfolio are demonstrating their commitment to teaching sustainable lab practices through:
• Promoting waste and energy reduction within all chemistry, environmental and biotechnology academic labs
• Substituting, where possible, traditionally hazardous materials with benign alternatives which still allow for learning outcomes to be met or exceeded
• Teaching students how to evaluate all aspects of project planning including assessing the environmental impacts of the materials they are using or producing
• Introducing green chemistry and sustainability concepts into curriculum which will allow students to better apply such concepts in a professional capacity

We expect to create zero hazardous waste from our chemistry labs as a signature project in our College Sustainability Commitment. We will reduce hazardous waste to a minimum and then create waste treatment processes to reclaim metals, convert biological waste to fuel and clean the remaining effluent.
