The Faculty of Science and Engineering, and the Department of Natural Sciences has had many long-standing research initiatives on sustainability themes from living plant walls, to environmental science, to the sustainability of air travel. Within Chemistry, several researchers are actively involved in Green Chemistry projects ranging from recycling and waste management, to plastics, to sustainable synthesis. In 2019 a dedicated Green Chemistry unit was added to both the full time and degree-apprentice chemistry courses, with Advanced Green Chemistry being added the following year. Following a review and restructure of the MMU Chemistry and Pharmaceutical chemistry courses, sustainability and Green Chemistry will be embedded within the applied chemistry skills units for all chemists in the future.

We are moving to a more integrated approach (i.e. less separation between subjects) moving forward to our new course structure, this is expected to give more scope for talking about green chemistry in the context of case studies in applied or theory units. We will include more toxicology, and include at least one dedicated Green Chemistry practical.
