Greening the Chemistry Research and Teaching Labs: Resources to Increase Safety and Reduce Waste
October 3, 2018 @ 9:15 am - 10:15 am

Join Dr. Amy Cannon from Beyond Benign and Dr. Jane Wissinger from the University of Minnesota at the annual Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) conference in Pittsburgh, PA.
Description:
University and college campuses across the United States are pushing the envelope on greening their campus facilities, operations, and processes. However, despite their disproportionate consumption of resources, laboratories are often excluded from sustainability programs. Bringing sustainable practices into the chemistry research and teaching laboratories can have a significant impact on increasing safety, conserving energy, reducing waste and hazardous chemical usage, amongst other tangible benefits.
This presentation will provide attendees with resources that can be readily implemented within the chemistry research and teaching laboratories, spanning from conservation approaches to greener alternative substitutions. Green chemistry in practice has proven to provide a safer working environment for researchers and students, while maintaining a high level of rigor for teaching and excellence in research. In this session, participants will connect safety and ethics issues directly to real-world applications of safer chemical approaches in the laboratory. Examples will be presented from universities who are actively implementing safer, greener laboratory practices across research and teaching divisions.
