The University of Texas at El Paso

The University of Texas at El Paso sits in Far West Texas, out past the oilfields, in a region once known (and will soon be again) for their mining engineering excellence. The history of the borderland region is home to important chemistry, including La Esmelda (the former ASARCO lead and copper smelter ~3 miles away) and 70 miles south of the Trinity Site of the Manhattan Project nuclear bomb test. Our faculty research focuses on energy, environment and water, and health and diagnostics: legacies of the unique history of the region. The addition of chemistry education research has sparked an interest in green chemistry to complement the department’s strength in environmental chemistry research. Our focus will be on implementing green chemistry, sustainability, and RAMP safety in the undergraduate laboratories.

The short term goal will be to incorporate RAMP safety into the laboratory courses, adopt a greener organic chemistry lab curriculum, and incorporate lecture assessments that engage students in green chemistry or sustainability principles. Long-term goals will include reducing the hazards and waste in all the undergraduate laboratories, incorporate green chemistry assessments in the general and organic chemistry lectures, and creating a stand-alone green chemistry course for graduate students (who are our teaching assistants).
