Job Description
The Director of Marketing & Communications will play a leading role in defining and executing Beyond Benign’s marketing and communication strategy. Beyond Benign has seen steady programmatic and financial growth over the past five years. We are looking for a strong team player excited to foster a green chemistry community that empowers educators to transform chemistry education for a sustainable future. We are looking for an individual who can develop a marketing and communications strategy that builds awareness of our organization, increases engagement with our community members, and communicates the success of our programs.
The ideal individual will have strong written and verbal communication, administrative and organizational skills and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities. The Director of Communications will have the ability to work independently on projects, from conception to completion, and must be able to communicate to a wide variety of audiences. This role is a remote position, with flexible, part-time hours and reports into the Executive Director. The Director of Marketing & Communications would work directly with Beyond Benign’s K-12 and Higher Ed program teams, Development and design contractors.

Beyond Benign is fostering a green chemistry education community empowered to transform chemistry education for a sustainable future. Beyond Benign’s continuum of sustainable science educational programs including, teacher and faculty training, and curriculum development from K-20 are helping to build the next generation of scientists and citizens with the skills and knowledge to create and choose products that are safe for human health and the environment. Over the past 13 years, Beyond Benign has an extensive history of service, having trained over 6,000 K-12 teachers in sustainable science and green chemistry, designed over 200 open-access lessons, reached over 25,000 youth and community members through outreach, & partnered with 70 universities to transform chemistry education. Roles & Responsibilities (include, but not limited to):
- Refine and execute our marketing and communication strategy across all communication channels to foster a green chemistry community and enhance engagement
- Develop a monthly communications calendar in partnership with K-12 and Higher Ed program managers
- Create content for social sites and website, including short videos from past events
- Support and promote in-person and virtual events such as conferences and webinars
- Design collateral material for organization and programs
- Maintain and update the Beyond Benign website and Google microsites
- Write and release quarterly newsletters
- Write press releases around upcoming events and partnerships
- Manage social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn
- Assist in the creation of the Beyond Benign Annual Report
Required and Desired Characteristics:
- Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail
- Very strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and communicate with a diverse audience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Highly proficient in all social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter)
- Ability to write interesting copy for educational and science programs
- Highly resourceful team player with the ability to also be extremely effective independently
- Outstanding project management skills with an ability to develop ambitious goals and achieve them on time
Education and Experience Requirements:
- 15+ years of Communication or marketing experience, preferably for a science or education-based organization
- Background in Science, Science Communication, Sustainability or Education preferred
- Interest and/or experience in community building
- Administrative skills including but not limited to: proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, and Social Media web platforms
