SUMMARY:Greening the Chemistry Research and Teaching Labs: Resources to Increase Safety and Reduce Waste
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Amy Cannon from Beyond Benign and Dr. Jane Wissinger from the University of Minnesota at the annual Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) conference in Pittsburgh\, PA. \nDescription: \nUniversity and college campuses across the United States are pushing the envelope on greening their campus facilities\, operations\, and processes. However\, despite their disproportionate consumption of resources\, laboratories are often excluded from sustainability programs. Bringing sustainable practices into the chemistry research and teaching laboratories can have a significant impact on increasing safety\, conserving energy\, reducing waste and hazardous chemical usage\, amongst other tangible benefits. \nThis presentation will provide attendees with resources that can be readily implemented within the chemistry research and teaching laboratories\, spanning from conservation approaches to greener alternative substitutions. Green chemistry in practice has proven to provide a safer working environment for researchers and students\, while maintaining a high level of rigor for teaching and excellence in research. In this session\, participants will connect safety and ethics issues directly to real-world applications of safer chemical approaches in the laboratory. Examples will be presented from universities who are actively implementing safer\, greener laboratory practices across research and teaching divisions. \n

SUMMARY:Safer Made Webinar: Investing in Safer Chemistry and Consumer Products
DESCRIPTION:Register Today! \nThis webinar will feature Dr. Marty Mulvihill\, General Partner at Safer Made. \nDescription: At Safer Made we support companies that create chemicals and materials that make our consumer products healthier for people and the natural world. This means creating alternatives to harmful chemicals and thinking about product design\, from manufacturing through the end of a product’s useful life. In today’s marketplace\, consumers are demanding safer and more sustainable products and this translates into a multi-billion opportunity for safer chemistry and product innovation. The webinar will highlight current innovation trends in safer chemistry that are reshaping the way that packaging\, textile and apparel\, building materials\, and formulated products are made. At Safer Made we believe that everyone plays a role in shaping the future of chemistry and this talk will share ways that you can get involved in supporting the creation of safer and more sustainable products. \n

SUMMARY:Chemical Education Seminar\, Purdue University
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Benign’s Executive Director\, Dr. Amy Cannon\, will give a seminar at the Chemical Education department at Purdue University. \nTitle: Green Chemistry Education: Preparing next generation chemists to practice sustainability through chemistry \nAbstract: \nToday’s global sustainability challenges will involve innovative chemical solutions. Green chemistry by definition is the intentional design of safer\, less hazardous products and processes that reduce or eliminate hazardous substances. The implementation of green chemistry throughout educational systems is essential to support a growing global greener chemicals market. Through innovation in the laboratory and with changes in chemical education\, chemistry students can be prepared to solve 21st century problems. \nThis presentation will discuss techniques and resources for adopting green chemistry throughout our educational systems and highlight higher education programs that are aimed at transforming chemistry education\, including Beyond Benign’s Green Chemistry Commitment\, a voluntary\, flexible framework for chemistry departments to adopt green chemistry theory and practice. The Commitment aims to transform chemistry education in higher education to equip students with the skills and knowledge to design safer\, more sustainable products and processes. Additional resources will be presented\, including a newly available Green Chemistry Resource Guide for the Organic Chemistry Lab Course.
