DESCRIPTION:Commonwealth Chemistry\, the Federation of Commonwealth Chemical Sciences Societies\, is delighted to announce that the third Commonwealth Chemistry Congress (CCC2025) will take place at the Protea by Marriott Hotel Stellenbosch\, South Africa\, 11-14 May 2025. \nThe Commonwealth is a uniquely diverse group of nations with shared values and a powerful voice. It represents all corners of the globe with a population of 2.5 billion and includes both advanced economies and developing countries. It is home to 12% of the world’s researchers and accounts for around 10% of global research and development expenditure. With 1 in 3 people aged between 15 and 29 living in Commonwealth countries\, the Commonwealth is set to play an ever more important role in the world’s future – a future that will present many challenges where science can identify solutions. \nBringing together chemists from across the Commonwealth under the banner of equality for all\, the Commonwealth Chemistry Congress will promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, strengthen scientific capacity\, inspire and elevate the role of the chemical sciences to society and policy makers\, and celebrate achievements in chemistry. Why are consumers often reluctant to adopt environmentally friendly practices and technologies? Among the various factors\, a key role is played by systematic psychological biases—particularly risk perception and how people develop habits. The first part of the lecture will introduce the cognitive and emotional mechanisms underlying these biases. It will then focus on people’s resistance to chemistry (Chemophobia) and their skepticism about green chemistry. They generate large amounts of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste (including solvents\, reagents\, solids\, glassware\, filter paper\, drying agents\, disposable gloves\, and column waste) daily. However\, this is often considered a necessary evil and an acceptable price to pay to make innovative discoveries for the betterment of humanity. Fortunately\, this does not need to be the case; research in higher education can be done in a way that allows for discovery and innovation to take place without generating large amounts of waste and subjecting students\, postdoctoral fellows and researchers to hazardous compounds and laboratory conditions. Importantly\, there are many safer alternative reagents\, solvents\, and laboratory materials that can be used to reduce risk of exposure. This approach\, known as green chemistry\, utilizes a set of twelve practical principles for research and bench chemists to help reduce the use and generation of hazardous substances for humans and the environment. \nThis workshop introduces green chemistry and how its associated twelve principles can be applied at the graduate and postdoctoral level in research laboratories across universities and colleges in Canada. The workshop will explore examples of how green chemistry has been successfully introduced into research labs in different subdisciplines of chemistry and will provide an opportunity for participants to work in small groups through guided discussions to identify ways of improving their own laboratory practices and research to shift towards greener and more sustainable practices. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Description \nIn 2025\, ChemEd will be hosted by Colorado School of Mines (First ChemEd ever hosted in Colorado!) . The conference will take place on campus allowing for hands-on labs\, workshops\, and demonstrations\, along with a variety of events focused on teaching chemistry. It is a chance to be part of a community of dedicated and involved science educators. \nThe first ChemEd was held at the University of Waterloo and has matured having established many ChemEd traditions\, such as the Reg Friesen lecture\, an ice cream social\, children/family program\, Mole Day breakfast and Mole Stroll/Run. The end-of-conference celebration showcasing the hosting community was a tradition that began in its inaugural year. \nWho should attend? \n\n\nThis biennial conference is the largest in North America for educators involved in teaching high school and introductory chemistry. It is an opportunity for educators to gather for five days to learn and exchange their teaching ideas in a friendly and motivating environment. In recent years\, the conference attendance has ranged from 400 to 800 educators.

SUMMARY:ACS GCI Green & Sustainable Chemistry Summer School
DESCRIPTION:The ACS Green and Sustainable Chemistry Summer School (GSCSS) is a highly selective week-long program for graduate students and postdoctoral chemists and engineers. Each year\, approximately 60 exceptional students from North\, Central\, and South America and the Caribbean are selected from a large pool of applicants and gather for this fully funded once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The American Chemical Society pays for all eligible travel and program costs. \nOrganized and hosted by the Green Chemistry Institute since 2003\, the summer school typically features more than a dozen expert instructors who share knowledge and skills from across a broad spectrum of topics directly relevant to green chemistry and sustainability. Throughout the program\, students attend lectures and interactive study/project sessions\, present posters about their own research\, hold discussions\, and spend time networking both with each other and the GSCSS faculty. Alumni of this program have gone on to become leaders in many green chemistry and sustainability-related fields and provide participants with an extensive network of professional contacts.
