SUMMARY:Gordon Research Seminar - Biomass to Biobased Chemicals and Materials
DESCRIPTION:The Biomass to Biobased Chemicals and Materials GRC is a premier\, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research\, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes a diverse range of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide\, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities\, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks\, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages\, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field. \nSwitching from a non-renewable fossil-based economy to a bioeconomy relying on biomass utilization is the challenging industrial revolution that humanity must achieve to address the needs of an ever-growing global population\, while limiting global warming. Terrestrial and aquatic biomass offers a wide variety of valuable components such as lignins\, (hemi)celluloses\, other (poly)saccharides\, proteins\, secondary metabolites\, that could be used for the production of biobased bulk\, fine and specialty chemicals\, polymers and transportation fuels. Biorefineries\, which consist in the development of individual biomass process streams that convert primary biomass components into end products and the effective integration of these streams\, are the core elements of the bioeconomy concept. This GRC will look at how scientists and engineers can overcome\, through transdisciplinary approaches\, the fundamental challenges that these biorefineries are facing today. \nThis GRC aims at gathering international experts in the following science and engineering activities to foster the development of sustainable biomass conversion process into valuable chemicals and materials: i) chemical/biological/mechanical strategies to deconstruct or fractionate lignocellulose and (micro)algae into individual biomass components\, ii) increasing the selectivity and efficiency of chemical\, biological or hybrid catalysts for biomass conversion technologies\, iii) selective lignin conversions that provide narrow compositional ranges of aromatic and aliphatic building blocks; iv) selective polysaccharides conversion that provide building blocks and solvents ; v) genetic engineer of plants to increase their susceptibility to deconstruction methods and as factories to produce natural and non-natural chemicals; vi) engineering microorganisms (molecular and synthetic biology) to access natural and non-natural building blocks or end products from biomass; vii) developing chemical/biological/mechanical sustainable processes that convert biomass-derived building blocks into end products (fine chemicals\, functional additives\, polymers/materials); and viii) designing cost-efficient processes for the extraction/purification of biomass components\, building blocks and end products. \nMeet us there! More information to come.

SUMMARY:Materials Metabolism: Green Chemistry for a Circular Economy
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin us at the University of Birmingham for a general interest seminar talk\, given by Beyond Benign Co-Founder and Father of Green Chemistry\, Dr. John Warner. \nOfficial Talk Description: \nAs we design products to be more sustainable and to fit within a circular economy we are best served to recognize and learn from patterns within nature. \nThere exists a circular pendulum that swings between the natural world of stable ecosystems and the human built world of products. Centrally located between these two systems exists the domain of the “materials metabolism”\, the molecular mechanistic foundation of the assembly and disassembly of molecules and materials. Nature typically carries out the deconstruction and construction of materials through catabolism and anabolism\, performing both metabolic processes synchronously. Human industrial design has evolved to perform the synthesis and breakdown processes in spatially and temporarily separate spaces. The principles of green chemistry provide a logical framework to design products within the materials metabolism. This presentation will discuss the general concept of the materials metabolism and provide real world green chemistry examples. \nEvent Details\n\nWho: Open/Entire Community\nWhen: September 4th\, 2023\nWhere: Birmingham\, UK\nHow: This lecture is open to the public.

SUMMARY:Sustainability in Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:  \nOfficial Event Description: \nSustainable chemistry offers solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing society. This event celebrates the enormous strides made towards using chemistry to ensure a safe and healthy world for tomorrow and the launch of the School of Chemistry’s MSci in Chemistry with Sustainability. \nJoin us in Birmingham to hear from leading experts in diverse areas of Sustainable Chemistry and about recent breakthroughs in this world-changing field. The symposium includes a range of leading speakers from UK and abroad\, alongside opportunities for PhD and postdoctoral researchers to present their work through oral and poster presentations.  The symposium will be based at the University of Birmingham Edgbaston Campus\, which is well on its way to becoming a Smart and Net Zero Campus by 2035\, and already filled with thousands of trees\, a botanic garden and schemes to protect wildlife such as hedgehogs on campus. \nLearn more about the event and register here. \n  \nFeatured Talk: A Systemic Change for a Sustainable Future: The Green Chemistry Commitment  \nDr. Juliana Vidal\, Program Manager\, Higher Education \nJoin us in Birmingham for Dr. Juliana Vidal’s talk\, A Systemic Change for a Sustainable Future: The Green Chemistry Commitment. \nEducation is central to creating lasting change\, and a background in sustainability allows the development of a scientific workforce and a knowledgeable citizenry prepared to design and choose more benign processes for human health and the environment. In this context\, green chemistry education plays a fundamental role in achieving the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the targets stated due to its capacity to reach and interconnect distinct aspects of our society.  \nBeyond Benign is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a systemic change in chemistry education and empowering the chemistry community to practice sustainability at the molecular level through green chemistry. Its Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC) program was created in 2013 and aims to catalyze the incorporation of green chemistry into science courses at higher education institutions globally.  \nOver 130 institutions are part of the GCC community and are integrating green chemistry on their own timelines and building upon unique campus environments and strengths. In this presentation\, insights into the GCC program adoption around the world and in the UK will be discussed\, as well as the GCC implementation in a wide range of higher education institutions.  \n \nEvent Details\n\nWho: Open/Entire Community\nWhen: September 7th-September 8th\nWhere: Birmingham\, UK\nHow: Register here.
