SUMMARY:New York Green Chemistry PLT
DESCRIPTION:From ocean plastic to forest fires\, our world needs invention\, innovation\, and creativity to find solutions to our biggest problems. Green chemistry\, also known as the science of solutions\, offers a framework for decreasing hazards within classrooms while promoting sustainability for both human health and the environment. Whether you are new to thinking about sustainability in the classroom or have already implemented green chemistry lesson plans\, we want you to join us. Together\, we will create a community of Green Chemistry educators within the state of NY. \nDuring our time together\, NY teachers will share and collaborate in the creation of NYSSLS Aligned Green Chemistry Labs\, videos of implementing labs\, and lesson plans spotlighting NY Industries practicing green chemistry. We may feature guest speakers who are leaders in sustainable science. Most importantly\, together we will share lessons and labs as we work together to add sustainability into our sciences. Please complete the enclosed short form to join the PLT team. This is a continuation of last year’s PLT\, but new members are welcome! If you have any questions\, please contact Jim Burdick at jburdick@ccsdk12.org. \nThis PLT is for teachers in grades 6 -12.\nOpen to ALL Master Teachers across the state + Invite a friend (non MTs) / OPEN \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:UC Santa Cruz Annual Bunnett Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This annual event was established in 2001 to honor and celebrate the late Prof. Joseph Bunnett’s seminal contributions: Prof. Bunnett was a pioneer in his sub-discipline of physical organic chemistry and a founding member of our department. The Bunnett Symposium has evolved into an opportunity to connect past and present friends of the Department for discussion\, accompanied by exposure to seminal ideas in chemistry through the distinguished lecture\, and an Awards Ceremony where we honor the academic and research achievements of our current crop of outstanding undergraduates. \nMeet us there! More information to come.

SUMMARY:Gordon Research Seminar - Biomass to Biobased Chemicals and Materials
DESCRIPTION:The Biomass to Biobased Chemicals and Materials GRC is a premier\, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research\, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes a diverse range of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide\, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities\, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks\, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages\, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field. \nSwitching from a non-renewable fossil-based economy to a bioeconomy relying on biomass utilization is the challenging industrial revolution that humanity must achieve to address the needs of an ever-growing global population\, while limiting global warming. Terrestrial and aquatic biomass offers a wide variety of valuable components such as lignins\, (hemi)celluloses\, other (poly)saccharides\, proteins\, secondary metabolites\, that could be used for the production of biobased bulk\, fine and specialty chemicals\, polymers and transportation fuels. Biorefineries\, which consist in the development of individual biomass process streams that convert primary biomass components into end products and the effective integration of these streams\, are the core elements of the bioeconomy concept. This GRC will look at how scientists and engineers can overcome\, through transdisciplinary approaches\, the fundamental challenges that these biorefineries are facing today. \nThis GRC aims at gathering international experts in the following science and engineering activities to foster the development of sustainable biomass conversion process into valuable chemicals and materials: i) chemical/biological/mechanical strategies to deconstruct or fractionate lignocellulose and (micro)algae into individual biomass components\, ii) increasing the selectivity and efficiency of chemical\, biological or hybrid catalysts for biomass conversion technologies\, iii) selective lignin conversions that provide narrow compositional ranges of aromatic and aliphatic building blocks; iv) selective polysaccharides conversion that provide building blocks and solvents ; v) genetic engineer of plants to increase their susceptibility to deconstruction methods and as factories to produce natural and non-natural chemicals; vi) engineering microorganisms (molecular and synthetic biology) to access natural and non-natural building blocks or end products from biomass; vii) developing chemical/biological/mechanical sustainable processes that convert biomass-derived building blocks into end products (fine chemicals\, functional additives\, polymers/materials); and viii) designing cost-efficient processes for the extraction/purification of biomass components\, building blocks and end products. \nMeet us there! More information to come.
