SUMMARY:Making the Case: Building a Sustainable Chemistry Minded Workforce
DESCRIPTION:Fluctuations in political\, economic\, and R&D cycles may introduce uncertainty and necessitate the reallocation of resources\, which can affect the adoption of sustainable chemistry and greener processes. Such disruptions have the potential to compromise long-term business resilience\, elevate risk levels\, and adversely impact both human health and the environment. Continuing to advance sustainable chemistry in a changing environment requires continued policy\, investment\, and market commitments. \nTo ensure sustainable chemistry remains a priority\, demonstrating and communicating its positive impact on all business functions and through the value chain is critical. During this webinar series\, subject matter experts will share tools and insights to assist champions with effectively “making the case”. Structured as a series of discussions\, attendees will have the unique opportunity to pre-competitively engage with the speakers and other companies facing similar challenges. \nDuring the first 3 webinars\, experts shared the benefits of sustainable chemistry for investors\, on domestic manufacturing\, and business health. This webinar builds on these conversations by highlighting the need for education – both in academia and for workforce development – in order to build a workforce with sustainable chemistry knowledge and skill sets. Juan Colberg from Pfizer will discuss the business benefits of a sustainability minded workforce and needs to attract this talent. Amy Cannon from Beyond Benign will share how our community can support students and educators in training the next generation for success. \n*This webinar is available to Change Chemistry members only.

Do you want to change the world through science? Join us throughout 2025 to learn from experts in the field leading the charge to solve existential\, world needs through chemistry. \nDuring this webinar series\, speakers will orient their presentations around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Top 10 Emerging Technologies to demonstrate the power that chemists hold in shaping and preserving the future. Each talk will be accompanied by short videos on the topic geared toward high school and university chemistry students as well as the general public. \nThis series is hosted by Beyond Benign and the IUPAC Committee on Chemical Research Applied to World Needs (CHEMRAWN). Register below and invite your friends and colleagues! \n \n  \n  \n  \n\nDepartment of Chemistry\, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay \nThe total volume of water on earth is constant at 1021 liters. India has 4% of the global fresh-water resources with ~20% of the global population. Therefore\, majority of Indian sub-continent is suffering from acute water stress. Equitable access to clean potable water is both a direct\, important target of United National Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6) and simultaneously carries significance to several other SDGs (SDG 3\,7\,13\,15). Therefore\, sustainable\, cost-effective and affordable recovery of freshwater from contaminated water feedstock is the need of the hour to ensure it equitable access. \nSolar-thermal interfacial evaporation offers immense and hitherto untapped potential for energy-efficient\, sustainable freshwater production. However\, fundamental challenges in materials and system-design result in low water evaporation rates (Rw < 1-2 kgm-2h-1) and even lower solar-freshwater productivity (SWP). Further\, the lack of thermally and chemically stable materials that can operate in extreme salinities such as seawater without fouling or degrading is a major bottleneck that limits the wider adaptation of the technology. \nThis Talk would describe an ultra-thin\, porosity-engineered polymeric scaffold (poly-HIPE\, PH) that is anisotropically coated with nanostructured carbon florets (NCF) to deliver high solar-thermal conversion efficiency (η-STC = 84%)\, excellent Rw (6.5 kgm-2h-1) and exceptional SWP (3.5 Lm-2h-1) from sea-water. A few salient features of the material are\n(a) Thinnest such membrane with no-signs of fouling over 30 days in sea-water\, achieving\n(b) Salt-rejection of ~95% with facile reusability for over 30 days\,\n(c) Producing freshwater of ~20 liters per m2 area per day at\n(d) Lowest CO2 footprint (< 3 W/L\, ~3 g /L) \nFundamental insights of materials-design to address the exothermic water-evaporation step that are synergized with systems-design approaches to achieve these key performance indices would be discussed in the talk.

SUMMARY:Regenerative Metropolis ’25 – Passive House as Foundation to System Integration
DESCRIPTION:Passive house’s reliable and superior energy performance with its myriad of co-benefits\, is the cornerstone of the architectural solutions we require to be able to thrive. It is a firm foundation upon which we can build a regenerative society that repairs ecosystems damage\, reverses it\, and begins to increase all life.  There is a rising consciousness emerging revealing how comprehensive the field of sustainability is truly required to be if we are to meaningfully move towards regeneration. Only by broadening the lenses of our understanding can we take advantage of synergies of our actions across systems\, and exponentially increase positive impacts. \nFor this year’s symposium\, we invited you to submit proposals showcasing how passive house design relates to any aspects of regenerative design that are dear to your interests or practice.  We had an enthusiastic response from diverse locations and perspectives\, all with inspiring examples of reaching for Regeneration and how Passive House was\, or in some cases was not\, a cornerstone of the strategy. \nIn the spirit of this symposium’s continual drive to integrate various disciplines through architecture\, we also invited a scientist focused on Green Chemistry to close out the day and inspire us with efforts in that movement to address issues upstream. \nPlease join our tireless community for what we believe will be an inspiring\, challenging\, yet hopeful day!

SUMMARY:Greener Curriculum Showcase Series: Green Chemistry and Sustainability Case Studies in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:This free\, virtual workshop is designed to support educators in effectively adapting and implementing case studies based on soy chemistry. It also guides educators in developing their own case studies using a newly created template and instructional guide co-developed by Beyond Benign and the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute (ACS GCI). Integrating case studies into the curriculum is an effective way to provide context for chemical concepts and highlight real-world green chemistry applications and sustainable innovations for students. \nThe soy chemistry case studies are part of a new curriculum launched this fall. These studies explore the industrial applications of soybeans as a renewable resource\, demonstrating how green chemistry principles and sustainable innovation can replace petroleum-based products such as transformer oils\, solvents\, and wood adhesives. Each case study is designed to engage students with real-life contexts while reinforcing key chemistry concepts commonly taught in the classroom. \nThe case study templates help educators seamlessly incorporate real-world chemistry examples into their teaching\, with an emphasis on sustainability and systems thinking. Each template includes a comprehensive workbook and user guide to support instructors through the process of developing and implementing case studies effectively. \nThis resource is ideal for educators seeking to enrich their curriculum with practical\, sustainability-focused content aligned with the ACS Guidelines for Bachelor’s Degree Programs. Workshop participants will gain hands-on experience with the case study framework and learn strategies for using and creating case studies that highlight the critical role of chemistry in sustainable innovation—fostering a deeper understanding of the design of greener chemical products and processes\, and equipping students to contribute to a more sustainable future. \nDuring the 2-hour session\, facilitators will guide participants through the resources\, offer practical strategies for adaptation and implementation\, and create opportunities for educators to share insights. The workshop will feature group-based learning\, discussions\, networking opportunities\, and a Q&A session. Don’t miss this opportunity to expand your teaching toolkit\, engage with peers\, and inspire the next generation of green chemists! \n \nThe goals for the workshop include:\n\nEducate participants on the use of case studies as effective teaching tools in the classroom.\nGuide participants through practical approaches for adapting and creating case studies for their curriculum.\nEmpower participants to implement case study resources and expand their professional network.\n\nWe hope you’ll join us!
