SUMMARY:Empowering Youth through Culturally Sustaining Science Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:Join Raks Derival and Dr. Rasheda Likely in their presentation\, “Empowering Youth through Culturally Sustaining Science Curriculum.” \nREGISTER HERE \nIn this presentation\, you will hear from two scientist-educator-researchers\, both women of color\, who investigate the development and implementation of a culturally sustaining science curriculum. High school students participated in an independent project focused on chemistry and social justice. \nThese activities were aligned with the culturally sustaining framework in the following five ways: content centered in the Next Generation Science Standards 3D framework\, centering and following students’ interests\, challenging the status quo by focusing on students as experts\, sustaining student agency through artifacts and products that students chose and iteratively developed\, and multi-modal assessments. Through their project\, the students led the entire research process including engaging in several science and engineering practices such as: asking guiding questions\, planning and carrying out investigation\, collaborating with an expert\, analysis of data\, and communicating findings. \nThis project both empowers students to take risks and serves as an example for other educators who are interested in culturally sustaining praxis. Outcomes of culturally sustaining curricula vary widely since students and their interests in the content is the central focus of this framing. Although the ambiguity of implementing such a curriculum that follows students’ interests can be daunting\, we firmly believe “You cannot predict the magic”. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Invention with Intention: A discussion with Dr. John Warner\, candidate for ACS President.
DESCRIPTION:Chemistry is everywhere. But it goes mostly unseen. Society has come to view the invisibility of chemistry as something insidious\, like a monster under our beds\, lurking\, waiting to hurt us. Open up the newspaper\, turn on the radio\, look on the internet\, we all know the stories: Carcinogens\, Climate Change\, Ocean Plastics\, Endocrine Disruptors… When chemistry is visible\, it’s usually not good. It doesn’t have to be this way.  This presentation will discuss three necessary efforts that the chemical enterprises must undertake to maximize our ability to invent the future sustainably. (1) Broadening the chemistry community\, (2) Invention education and (3) True multidisciplinarity. Invention with Intention requires that we continue to cultivate and celebrate the amazing things that chemistry is already well known for. But we must be more accessible to the non-chemistry community. Because at the end of the day\, we do what we do – to serve them. \nRegister for this FREE webinar HERE. \nLearn more about Dr. John Warner\, candidate for ACS President\, by visiting his website.

SUMMARY:AACT Webinar: Using Sustainablity to Foster Equity in Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:AACT Webinar: Using Sustainability to Foster Equity in Chemistry  \nIn this time of momentous change and planetwide introspection\, teachers look to their curricula to determine how it meets the needs of today’s self-aware students. \nCurious how sustainability and equity can fit into your standards? Wondering how to talk about big issues within a limited timeframe? \nThere is an opportunity to bridge science and sustainability in new ways to invite your students into conversations around equity\, environmental justice\, and green chemistry. Scott Carlson\, a New York City teacher and Green Chemistry leader\, has been doing this in his classroom for years.  He brings his students into the conversation using relatable materials in labs\, discussing the inequities in science\, and inviting collaboration with hands-on green chemistry labs. While transitioning back and forth from virtual to in-person teaching\, Scott utilizes COVID examples and critical thinking challenges to promote student collaboration and exploration. Scott will share ready-to-use direct-to-student examples and lesson plans.  Listen to him share his solutions to using science to talk about social science\, and how chemistry plays a role in the communication of complex concepts.

SUMMARY:SLiThEr #11 – Implementing Green Chemistry in the Inorganic Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:Join our Greener Chemistry Laboratory Fellow Dr. John De Backere from the University of Toronto and our Higher Education Program Manager\, Dr. Natalie O’Neil at the next virtual SLiThEr hosted by IONiC / VIPEr the Interactive Online Network of Inorganic Chemists that host the Virtual Inorganic Pedagogical Electronic Resources. \nAre you interested in implementing green chemistry in your teaching and research? (No\, we don’t mean adding hexaaquanickel(II) to everything.) Green chemistry is sometimes taught as a standalone course or integrated into organic chemistry laboratory. However\, much less has been done for inorganic laboratory courses. Come discuss the ways you’ve tried to incorporate green chemistry into your courses as well as get ideas for how to make your inorganic laboratory courses more green. We look forward to a lively verdant discussion! \nThe discussion will be at 1 pm Pacific/4 pm Eastern on Thursday\, October 15th. You can register here.

SUMMARY:How does Green Chemistry help me do my job?
DESCRIPTION:Register now!  \nSometimes people will say “what I do has nothing to do with green chemistry” or “my job doesn’t involve green chemistry”. In the extreme\, someone who claims to “not do green chemistry” literally goes out of their way to intentionally find the most hazardous materials to work with! Let’s hope no one does this! The main issues around green chemistry are less related to creating the DESIRE for non-toxic and environmentally acceptable materials and technologies\, but more about the ABILITY to have access to them. While it is likely that chemical invention plays a key role in creating a sustainable future\, there are many other ways in which people benefit from some fundamental understanding of the principles of green chemistry. This presentation will look at the field of green chemistry from several different perspectives within NGO\, industrial\, academic\, and governmental organizations throughout the entire chemical supply chain. Questions will be solicited ahead of this webinar so that answers can be built into the presentation. Submit your questions or comments in advance of the live webinar through the registration form and join us to make some Green Chemistry Connections! \n\nFeatured Speaker:\n \nDr. John Warner\nDirector of Science and Innovation\, Beyond Benign\nDistinguished Professor of Green Chemistry\, Monash University\nCo-Founder of the field of Green Chemistry \nAnd Friends!
