SUMMARY:Toxicology for Chemists: Integrating Toxicology Principles into Higher Education Chemistry Courses
DESCRIPTION:Register for this event here! \n“A current key sustainability challenge is that scientists are not trained how to address hazards when designing chemical products. Specifically\, chemists lack training in toxicology: what makes a molecule hazardous to human health and the environment?” \nTo discuss these and other questions\, join our Higher Education Program Manager Dr. Nimrat Obhi on February 18th @ 2:00 PM (ET) during her presentation at the Two Year College Chemistry Consortium (2YC3)\, where Nim will provide an overview of our Toxicology for Chemists curriculum. This has curriculum has been developed by a group of key experts and contains lectures\, supplementary material\, and additional resources to allow educators and current and future scientists to understand and practice chemistry that is safe and responsible for society. In this talk\, Nim will show us how the course modules can be used\, and the support that Beyond Benign can provide to educators who want to implement elements into their courses.

SUMMARY:The Green Chemistry Classroom: Modeling Environmental Sustainability Through Safer Labs
DESCRIPTION:An edTrends event: \nJoin NYS Master Teachers to discuss how they have “greened” their chemistry classroom. How? In collaboration with Beyond Benign\, a national organization devoted to sustainability in the chemistry classroom\, NYS Master Teachers have redesigned traditional chemistry labs lesson plans to reduce and/or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances while remaining NYS Science Learning Standards-(NYSSLS)-aligned. Using sustainability as a framework\, these teachers highlight New York State industries that practice green chemistry in their classrooms. The teachers will share direct lesson plans and labs\, from conducting a green inventory to removing harmful chemicals. Engage your students in the science of solutions guided by an interdisciplinary approach to environmental sustainability. \n\nFlyer here: EdTrends Green Chem Nov 2021

SUMMARY:Empowering Youth through Culturally Sustaining Science Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:Join Raks Derival and Dr. Rasheda Likely in their presentation\, “Empowering Youth through Culturally Sustaining Science Curriculum.” \nREGISTER HERE \nIn this presentation\, you will hear from two scientist-educator-researchers\, both women of color\, who investigate the development and implementation of a culturally sustaining science curriculum. High school students participated in an independent project focused on chemistry and social justice. \nThese activities were aligned with the culturally sustaining framework in the following five ways: content centered in the Next Generation Science Standards 3D framework\, centering and following students’ interests\, challenging the status quo by focusing on students as experts\, sustaining student agency through artifacts and products that students chose and iteratively developed\, and multi-modal assessments. Through their project\, the students led the entire research process including engaging in several science and engineering practices such as: asking guiding questions\, planning and carrying out investigation\, collaborating with an expert\, analysis of data\, and communicating findings. \nThis project both empowers students to take risks and serves as an example for other educators who are interested in culturally sustaining praxis. Outcomes of culturally sustaining curricula vary widely since students and their interests in the content is the central focus of this framing. Although the ambiguity of implementing such a curriculum that follows students’ interests can be daunting\, we firmly believe “You cannot predict the magic”. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Invention with Intention: A discussion with Dr. John Warner\, candidate for ACS President.
DESCRIPTION:Chemistry is everywhere. But it goes mostly unseen. Society has come to view the invisibility of chemistry as something insidious\, like a monster under our beds\, lurking\, waiting to hurt us. Open up the newspaper\, turn on the radio\, look on the internet\, we all know the stories: Carcinogens\, Climate Change\, Ocean Plastics\, Endocrine Disruptors… When chemistry is visible\, it’s usually not good. It doesn’t have to be this way.  This presentation will discuss three necessary efforts that the chemical enterprises must undertake to maximize our ability to invent the future sustainably. (1) Broadening the chemistry community\, (2) Invention education and (3) True multidisciplinarity. Invention with Intention requires that we continue to cultivate and celebrate the amazing things that chemistry is already well known for. But we must be more accessible to the non-chemistry community. Because at the end of the day\, we do what we do – to serve them. \nRegister for this FREE webinar HERE. \nLearn more about Dr. John Warner\, candidate for ACS President\, by visiting his website.

SUMMARY:AACT Webinar: Using Sustainablity to Foster Equity in Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:AACT Webinar: Using Sustainability to Foster Equity in Chemistry  \nIn this time of momentous change and planetwide introspection\, teachers look to their curricula to determine how it meets the needs of today’s self-aware students. \nCurious how sustainability and equity can fit into your standards? Wondering how to talk about big issues within a limited timeframe? \nThere is an opportunity to bridge science and sustainability in new ways to invite your students into conversations around equity\, environmental justice\, and green chemistry. Scott Carlson\, a New York City teacher and Green Chemistry leader\, has been doing this in his classroom for years.  He brings his students into the conversation using relatable materials in labs\, discussing the inequities in science\, and inviting collaboration with hands-on green chemistry labs. While transitioning back and forth from virtual to in-person teaching\, Scott utilizes COVID examples and critical thinking challenges to promote student collaboration and exploration. Scott will share ready-to-use direct-to-student examples and lesson plans.  Listen to him share his solutions to using science to talk about social science\, and how chemistry plays a role in the communication of complex concepts.
