It also guides educators in developing their own case studies using a newly created template and instructional guide co-developed by Beyond Benign and the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute (ACS GCI). Integrating case studies into the curriculum is an effective way to provide context for chemical concepts and highlight real-world green chemistry applications and sustainable innovations for students. \nThe soy chemistry case studies are part of a new curriculum launched this fall. These studies explore the industrial applications of soybeans as a renewable resource\, demonstrating how green chemistry principles and sustainable innovation can replace petroleum-based products such as transformer oils\, solvents\, and wood adhesives. Each case study is designed to engage students with real-life contexts while reinforcing key chemistry concepts commonly taught in the classroom. \nThe case study templates help educators seamlessly incorporate real-world chemistry examples into their teaching\, with an emphasis on sustainability and systems thinking. Each template includes a comprehensive workbook and user guide to support instructors through the process of developing and implementing case studies effectively. \nThis resource is ideal for educators seeking to enrich their curriculum with practical\, sustainability-focused content aligned with the ACS Guidelines for Bachelor’s Degree Programs. Workshop participants will gain hands-on experience with the case study framework and learn strategies for using and creating case studies that highlight the critical role of chemistry in sustainable innovation—fostering a deeper understanding of the design of greener chemical products and processes\, and equipping students to contribute to a more sustainable future. \nDuring the 2-hour session\, facilitators will guide participants through the resources\, offer practical strategies for adaptation and implementation\, and create opportunities for educators to share insights. DESCRIPTION:This free\, interactive discussion will begin with a demonstration of two GCI resources: Reagent Guides and an Acid-Base Selection Tool. \n\n\nPlease join the Division of Chemical Health and Safety (CHAS) from 4:00 – 5:00 PM EDT on Thursday\, August 21st for our next virtual CHAS Chat: Green Chemistry Resources and Solvent Alternatives. This free\, interactive discussion will begin with a demonstration by the Assistant Director of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute (GCI)\, Edmond Lam\, of two GCI resources: Reagent Guides and an Acid-Base Selection Tool. Xavier University Teaching Professor Kendra Denlinger will then discuss how to apply green chemistry and sustainability to teaching laboratories. Higher Education Content Manager at Beyond Benign\, Monica Soma Hensley\, will close the presentation portion of the CHAS Chat with an introduction to this nonprofit organization and their teaching and learning platform. \nThe CHAS Two-Year College (2YC) Community of Practice welcomes individuals who are interested in chemical health and safety in two-year colleges and similar institutions. To support faculty\, staff\, and students at such institutions\, the Community hosts CHAS Chats on a quarterly basis. SUMMARY:ACS GCI Green & Sustainable Chemistry Summer School
DESCRIPTION:The ACS Green and Sustainable Chemistry Summer School (GSCSS) is a highly selective week-long program for graduate students and postdoctoral chemists and engineers. Each year\, approximately 60 exceptional students from North\, Central\, and South America and the Caribbean are selected from a large pool of applicants and gather for this fully funded once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The American Chemical Society pays for all eligible travel and program costs. \nOrganized and hosted by the Green Chemistry Institute since 2003\, the summer school typically features more than a dozen expert instructors who share knowledge and skills from across a broad spectrum of topics directly relevant to green chemistry and sustainability. Throughout the program\, students attend lectures and interactive study/project sessions\, present posters about their own research\, hold discussions\, and spend time networking both with each other and the GSCSS faculty. Alumni of this program have gone on to become leaders in many green chemistry and sustainability-related fields and provide participants with an extensive network of professional contacts.

The theme of IUPAC 2025\, “Chemistry for Sustainable Future”\, underscores our commitment to exploring chemistry’s pivotal role in addressing global sustainability challenges. In addition to the scientific sessions on various disciplines in chemistry\, IUPAC 2025 also includes a special cluster of symposia on “Chemistry and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)” focusing on chemistry providing solutions and remedies to SDGs. \nAs we celebrate the 50th Edition of the biennial World Chemistry Congress\, we’ll also commemorate “100 years of Excellence in Chemistry Research and Innovations” at the 50WCC. We’ll be joined by Victor Sánchez\, Associate Professor at Northern Arizona University\, who will share how the GCC supports Northern Arizona University’s green chemistry goals. RSVP today and spread the word! \nAbout Victor: \nWebsite: https://sites.google.com/view/ramossanchezlabatnau/ \nProf. Ramos Sánchez joined the Northern Arizona University in 2023 and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry before he was appointed Tenured Professor in the Faculty of Chemical Sciences (Facultad de Ciencias Químicas in Spanish) at the Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua in Spanish) from 2011 to 2022. During his sabbatical\, he was appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of California\, San Diego\, in 2019. Previously\, he was a Lecturer at the Polytechnic University of Chiapas (Universidad Politécnica de Chiapas in Spanish) from 2009 to 2011. Prof. Ramos Sánchez holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom and a bachelor’s degree in industrial chemistry from the Autonomous University of Chihuahua. His main area of research focuses on the design and implementation of sustainable materials and processes for hydrogen production and fuel cells\, which has led him to accumulate extensive expertise in the development of green routes of synthesis and analysis. Additionally\, he collaborates enthusiastically with other fellow researchers in exciting areas such as food technology and environmental science\, offering strategies of instrumental analysis for different scientific challenges. \nProf. Ramos Sánchez has received research grants from the U.S. Department of Energy\, the Mexican Council of Science and Technology\, and the Ministry of Higher Education and contracts from local industrial partners (plastics\, aerospace\, and agroindustry). His publications have appeared in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Chemical Education\, Chemical Engineering Journal\, Journal of Material Chemistry A\, ACS Environmental Science & Technology\, ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering\, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy\, Catalysis Today\, and Carbon\, among others. As a result of his research\, Professor Ramos Sánchez was granted one patent in Mexico. \nProf. Ramos Sanchez has contributed to the development of human resources both as a research advisor/mentor and as an instructor\, teaching courses in instrumental analysis\, physical chemistry\, general chemistry and sustainable chemistry. He has served as an academic advisor in the elaboration and evaluation of the Mexican Standardized National Assessment of BSc in Chemistry (EGEL-Q/CENEVAL\, A.C.)
