- Girl Scouts Field Trip to Beyond Benign
Wilmington, MA - August 24, 2010A small group of Girl Scouts came to Beyond Benign's headquarters to learn about Green Chemistry & Sustainability. The visit included a tour of the Institute's facilities and focused on careers in science. Beyond Benign's summer Green Chemistry Interns from Lawrence High School helped conduct sustainability-minded activities with the scouts.

- Upward Bound Green Chemistry Internship
Wilmington, MA - August 23-27, 2010
Beyond Benign hosted four Lawrence High School students participating in the Salem State College Upward Bound Program in a week-long full-time work-study internship. The students were introduced to the green chemistry principles through a variety of hands-on activities. Their experience consisted of lab safety training, solar cell construction, testing and kit assembly along with lab work. Energy and enthusiasm was high all week as the girls assisted with new variations of lab experiments that will be preformed this year with middle school audiences. The Salem State College Upward Bound Program provides comprehensive academic and support services needed to equip participants with the skills and motivation necessary for success beyond secondary school and persistence in postsecondary education.Thank you Salem State College Upward Bound for such a fantastic partnership!

Being an entrepreneur comes in many forms, but the common denominator is the ability to recognize the opportunity when it presents itself and the will to pursue it. John Warner, co-founder of Green Chemistry and President of the Warner Babcock Institute, and Amy Cannon, co-founder of the Beyond Benign Foundation for Green Chemistry & Sustainable Science Education, started off the day with a 50 minute discussion that related science to student's lives.
Following the presentation, over 300 students took part in hands-on experiments based on current research being conducted in local universities and companies. Scientists from the Warner Babcock Institute, Beyond Benign, the Museum of Science and several local colleges & universities will provide a wide selection of experiments that demonstrate basic principles - and cutting edge sustainable science.[Professor Irv Levy, from Gordon College, is pictured, guiding an acid-base green chemistry activity.]

Roxbury, MA - November 20th, 200985 students from Mendel Elementary’s 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes will learn about the core concepts of sustainability and green chemistry in their first outreach lesson. The students will be challenged to find ways they can help the Earth by writing 3 ways they could reduce, reuse and recycle at home. The follow-up activity will have the students constructing their own solar cells using blackberries.

Bridgewater State College - November 14th, 2009Bridgewater State College will host the 8th Annual New England Undergraduate Environmental Research Symposium on Saturday, November 14, 2009. Undergraduate research posters (including completed, in progress, and proposed research) in all environmental disciplines from colleges and universities in the Northeastern U.S. are welcome! This Symposium provides an annual forum for discussion of issues related to environmental research and education particular to the New England region, and has opened doors to collaborations in research and education among the participants.

Thursday, July 29th, Beyond Benign welcomed 60 middle and high school teachers from around the world to our Green Chemistry & Sustainable Science Curriculum Workshops. The week long workshop was developed to introduce teachers and their students to the topic of Green Chemistry and to provide hands-on inquiry based curriculum units in which students can explore this emerging approach to chemical manufacturing and sustainability. The workshop was held in Boston and featured a trip to Beyond Benign and the Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry's headquarters where working green chemists took time out of their day to work with teachers on "greening" labs they routinely use in their classrooms. In the News...
President's Cancer Panel Aggressivly Supports Green Chemistry ::
the science and in education

The President's Cancer Panel released it's annual report today, which states: "Green chemistry initiatives and research should be pursued and supported more aggressively"
The annual report is titled: Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now and states that chemists "require additional training to understand environmental hazards and reformulate products" in order to develop (green chemistry) alternatives to currently used chemicals.
