What is Green Chemistry?

Pollution prevention at the molecular level

Green chemistry is an innovative, pro-active approach to pollution prevention. It targets pollution at the earliest, design stages. Green chemistry gives the practicing chemist the tools in order to develop products and process in a more environmentally benign manner. The chemist functions at the earliest stages of a product life-cycle where the decisions made at this stage have impact down stream within the product life-cycle. Therefore, if chemists can be taught to design products and processes in such a way where the generation and use of hazardous materials are avoided, then much waste and pollution can be prevented.
