Beyond Benign's Green Chemistry
Fellowship Program
Through this program, Beyond Benign staff train college student fellows from Massachusetts colleges. The fellows then work with our staff of scientists and education specialists to bring green chemistry to K-12 students. Staff and fellows discuss green chemistry topics, careers in science and lead lab experiments and hands-on activities at over 40 classroom and school events to demonstrate sustainable solutions to
scientific, environmental and social challenges.
College students inspire younger people to pursue studies in the sciences through our outreach mentoring program, while also raising awareness of environmental problems and environmentally benign solutions.
Stepping out from behind the lab bench to communicate research in simple and meaningful ways is incredibly valuable to college students. Green chemistry offers concrete solutions to many of the environmental challenges society faces. Inspiring the next generation of scientists is an excellent way to help create a sustainable tomorrow.
The fellows serve as ambassadors of green chemistry on a broader scale by helping to educate and inform the public on topics related to sustainability. Staff and fellows participate in over 20 community events annually throughout New England. By reaching out through activities based on real-world examples, we make science and sustainability relatable to everyone.Student Travel Awards
Through a generous grant from the National Science Foundation, the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute is providing participation support through a limited number of travel scholarships for students to attend the 15th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference. The NSF Student Scholars program reimburses students (enrolled in an accredited U.S. university at the undergraduate, graduate or postdoctoral level) for travel, accommodations, and registration fees for the conference.

Fellowship Support
Student Fellows will have semester long support by Beyond Benign staff to carry out outreach activities in K-12 classrooms and at community events.
Training
Beyond Benign staff will work directly with Outreach Fellows to train them on green chemistry content and Beyond Benign’s outreach activities.
Mentoring
Beyond Benign staff will work with the Outreach Fellows over the semesters in order to guide and mentor them. Staff will also work with the Fellows to guide the development of outreach activities appropriate for the age group they are targeting.
Supplies and Materials
All supplies and materials required for after school mentoring visits to K-12 classrooms and community events are provided by Beyond Benign staff. Staff organize supplies and help to prepare materials to be used for the visits by the Fellows.
Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference
Some Student Fellows will be awarded a travel stipend to participate in the ACS Green Chemistry and Engineering Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. (held in June) where they can discuss and present their experience and outreach project findings and meet like-minded scientists and experts.
Academic Year Responsibilities
Fellows cultivate community knowledge & awareness by discussing green chemistry topics, careers in science (with an emphasis on environmental responsibility), and perform hand‐on activities or interactive laboratory exercises to demonstrate green chemistry concepts and cutting edge sustainable technologies.
After School Mentoring
Fellows work with the same group of kids in a series:
being a role model & inspiring the next generation of
scientists.
Community Events
Fellows represent their College or University and Beyond Benign at science fairs and environmental informational events where they educate community members (parents, educators, and K-12 students) about Green Chemistry topics.
Outreach projects
In collaboration with Beyond Benign staff and their faculty advisors, the student fellows will create hands-on activities and improve general lab practices.
Culminating Events
All Fellows will present their projects and research at the
Green Chemistry Summit. This event celebrates Fellows′
contributions to their communities, the field of science and
to society.
Some Fellows will also have an opportunity to engage the larger scientific community by participating in the annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference in Washington, DC. They will share their outreach experience and present their outreach project at this annual conference.
